What makes compassion and generosity so hard for us? One, as a westerner we cannot think our way toward being more compassionate but rather we must get in touch with our heart. Two, compassion and generosity mean that we need to get involved in other people's lives, and that can be messy. Three, there are a number of motives which compete in our hearts. And four, there is often a gap between what we want to do and what we can really carry out in our life. Jesus wants to meet us today right in the middle of that gap in our hearts.

By now the roaring winds of Gustav are only a whisper. Cars scramble back to the coast. People are coming home from the storm. There are lots of different kinds of storm in life. Some storms we see the rain, feel the wind and wonder about the destruction. Other storms lurk deep within us. They're swirling, spinning in anger, images out of control, tearing whatever lies in the pathway. How does the storm factor in your life? How out of control is your inner world?
